I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when I was 22 months old and have been living with it for 18 years. I applied for a Diabetes Alert Dog Guide and received my best friend Ecco in November of 2022. She has made a huge difference in my life. She alerts me to my low blood sugars, brings me my testing kit and juice, and knows how to bark for help if I ever collapse. We have found that Ecco is consistently more accurate than all of my various devices in detecting blood sugar changes, sometimes even before I am low. My favourite thing that she can do is bring me juice in the middle of the night. Without her, I am quite unsteady getting up. She is now having all kinds of adventures at university with me. I feel more confident having her with me. I know that she will catch any low blood sugars that I don't feel and I know she will get help if I need it. I am much more comfortable living on my own with Ecco than I would be without her.
