General Info:

In 2018 a small group of local residents brought the walk for Dog Guides to Port Perry. Thanks to the encouragement and help from local business, the local Pet Valu, local media and Focus on Scugog, the Port Perry Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides (“the Walk”) last year was the largest fundraising walk for the Lions Foundation Dog Guides after the Oakville head office walk. In 2024 we raised a record of $30,859 with 175 people walking with 110 dogs. The Port Perry walk has raised $69,714 for Dog Guides since 2018. Pictures and videos of past walks can be seen by clicking here. The organizing committee of the Walk has grown from the original six people to 10 local residents for 2024. After every walk a frank analysis of what worked and what did not is done resulting in the increasing popularity of the walk. Based on last year’s registration information supplied by the Lion Foundation Dog Guides of Canada, 50% of registrants came from outside Port Perry with 38% from outside Scugog. The walk is a major tourist draw for Scugog! The key benchmarks have always been starting in Palmer Park by the waterfront on the walk’s official date of the last Sunday in May, walking thru beautiful downtown Port Perry and ending the walk at our awesome brewery, The Old Flame. Terry Vos of Vos Independent Grocer has always provided the complimentary lunch for participants as well as a generous donation. Local bag pipers Ian Robertson and Brian Richardson lead the walk with traditional Scottish melodies. The Port Perry Pet Valu and Paulmacs pet stores contribute with a very generous goodie bag that is given to all registered walkers. This is truly a major community event for Port Perry. Other local business sponsors include Anja from Sweden, Applewood Winery, Focus on Scugog, Framer’s Gallery, Green Tractors, Gus Brown Buick GMC, Hanks bakery, Jonathan van Bilsen, McDonalds, Mrs. Fields, Oakridge Golf Course, Port Perry BIA, Port Perry Lions, Port Perry Star, Port Perry Marina, PP Print, Marwans and the Scugog Chamber of Commerce to name a few. Tyler Briley, a famous local artist, routinely honours the walk by donating one of his original paintings. Scott and Pam Riley owners of our local Pet Valu and Paulmacs donate the overflowing grab bags! And to all those volunteers on the day of the walk that make the magic happen. This is truly a major community event for Port Perry and Scugog. The Walk gives back to the community by participating in local events like the Port Perry Santa Claus Parade and the Tartan Day Parade. In the past we also participated in the Vets for Vets July 1st parade, the Dog Days of Scugog, and the 150th anniversary celebrations scavenger hunts. Anything else:

In July 2023 the first dog guide named Artie arrived in Port Perry. Artie is an autism assistance dog guide. Each Autism Assistance Dog Guide is uniquely trained to meet each autistic child's individual needs. These Dog Guides can provide safety, companionship, calming relief in high-anxiety situations, and reduce the stress commonly experienced in public places. The bond formed between the Dog Guide, autistic child and their family allows for greater independence, social interaction and additional peace of mind when experiencing events in their community. A key goal from day 1 of the Port Perry Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides organizing team was to obtain a dog guide for a local resident !

This May, help me “walk across Canada” to give more Canadians a new leash on life!

From guiding their handlers through their daily lives to getting help when it's needed most, Dog Guides play a crucial role in the lives of Canadians with disabilities. By supporting me with a donation to the Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides, you are enabling Lions Foundation to fulfill their mission to empower Canadians with disabilities to navigate their world with confidence and independence by providing Dog Guides at no cost to them and supporting each pair in their journey together.

Please donate now and support me in my challenge!
