Our Team (Kurt & The Huskies) are back again this May, taking part in the “walk across Canada” to give more Canadians a new leash on life!

From guiding their handlers through their daily lives to getting help when it's needed most, Dog Guides play a crucial role in the lives of Canadians with disabilities. By supporting me with a donation to the Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides, you are enabling Lions Foundation to fulfill their mission to empower Canadians with disabilities to navigate their world with confidence and independence by providing Dog Guides at no cost to them and supporting each pair in their journey together.

Please donate now and support our Team challenge!  No donation is too small .. every dollar counts :-)

My Updates

What a journey !

Thursday 11th Apr
I first heard of the Lions Foundation for Dog Guides (LFCDG) in late January 2022, from the 6pm CTV news.  LFCDG were looking for "Foster Families" to take care/raise puppies for about a year until they go back for their formal training to be a Dog Guide.

And so the journey began -- signed up to be a foster and Kurt (male, black lab) came to our home mid-March 2022 and became part of our pack with Tootoo (male black/white) and Nukka (female, red/white) both Siberian Huskies.

It was an amazing experience to raise a future dog guide, the training classes, meeting other pus and their fosters and the staff at LFCDG.  When we attended the Starlight event for kids in Toronto, it was definitely an eye-opener.  At the young age of 10 months, Kurt was able to give comfort and joy to a young girl when Kurt put his head on the girls lap, and gave her kisses.  The girl's Mom was in tears, seeing her daughter so happy. She was so grateful !

A year went by fast and when we got the call April 2023, for Kurt being "career changed" (not moving forward to formal training) due to some genetics, I was in a roller-coaster of emotions -- disappointed and sad that he wont be moving on what he's been bred to be, that somehow it was my fault.  And yet on the other hand, I was happy that we can keep Kurt and live his life as a happy pet.

Move forward to 2024, it's been a year after the "formal adoption" has taken place and Kurt's green vest returned.  He had grown to be such a happy dog, so very different personality from the 2 Huskies.  He is such a "cuddle bug" and loves being in front of the fireplace during the cold winter days.  He's such a good swimmer, does not fear the waves at all.

With 3 dogs in the house, we are a full pack.  Eventually, I would love to foster another pup, and hope that the next one will move on to be a Dog Guide.
